Historically, bariatric surgeon insurability and insurance premiums have been negatively impacted by the cyclical nature of the insurance market as well as perhaps a misperception of the liability risks associated with the practice of bariatric surgery. One insurance company has been created to help to stabilize premiums for bariatric surgeons (NOVUS Insurance Company RRG).

Surgical Excellence, LLC has a service for bariatric surgeons who desire to be insured by any of the professional liability carriers that insure bariatric surgeons. That is, the service can help bariatric surgeons to incorporate liability risk reduction measures as well as attain the competencies desired by many of the insurance companies.

Practical tools and strategies are shared with the bariatric surgeon, including policies and procedures, patient accountability documentation, and patient involvement documentation. The process includes an on-site visit by members of the Surgical Excellence team that will gather information and evaluate it. Evidence-based recommendations are provided in a report format, with protections under the umbrella of attorney client privilege to the maximum extent permitted by state law.
